1

Open the privacy shutter

The #1 cause of webcam black screen is the physical privacy shutter. Most modern laptops (Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, MacBook Pro 2021+) have a tiny sliding cover over the camera lens.

Look at your webcam — if you see a small slider (usually black or red), slide it to the open position. On some laptops, the shutter is built into the bezel and barely visible.

Also check Fn keys: Fn + F8 or Fn + F10 often toggle the camera on/off (look for a camera icon on the key).

2

Close all apps using the camera

Only ONE app can use your webcam at a time. If Zoom, Teams, Meet, OBS, Discord, or FaceTime is running in the background, your browser gets a black screen.

Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc → find and end: Zoom, Teams, Meet, Skype, OBS, Discord, Snap Camera, FaceTime (if available)

Mac: Cmd+Tab to cycle through apps → close any video apps. Then Cmd+Q your browser and reopen it.

3

Reset browser camera permissions

Chrome: Click the lock icon ⓘ next to the URL → Camera → Allow. If already set to Allow, change it to "Ask (default)", refresh, then re-allow.

Full reset: Go to chrome://settings/content/camera → remove any sites under "Not allowed to use your camera" → restart Chrome.

Edge: edge://settings/content/camera → same steps.

Firefox: Click the camera icon in the address bar → ✕ Remove blocked status → refresh.

Safari: Safari menu → Settings for This Website → Camera → Allow.

4

Test your webcam with our free online tool

Go to WebcamTester.io and click "Test My Webcam". Our tool works in all browsers — no download, no signup.

It shows your camera feed immediately and displays: resolution (720p/1080p/4K), FPS, manufacturer, and even lets you test your microphone at the same time.

It works here but not in Zoom? → Your camera is fine — the problem is in Zoom's settings. Open Zoom → Settings → Video → select the correct camera.

Still black screen? → Continue to the next steps.

5

Reinstall your webcam driver (Windows)

Windows users: a corrupted camera driver is a very common cause of black screen.

Fix:

1. Press Windows + XDevice Manager

2. Expand Cameras → right-click your camera → Uninstall device

3. Check "Delete the driver software for this device" → Uninstall

4. Restart your PC — Windows automatically reinstalls the correct driver

External webcam (Logitech, Razer, etc.): download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website.

6

Check Windows or Mac system privacy settings

Windows 10/11: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera → turn ON "Camera access" AND "Let apps access your camera". Scroll down and make sure your browser is turned ON under "Choose which apps can access your camera".

Mac (macOS Ventura/Sonoma/Sequoia): System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → toggle ON for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge.

⚠️ After changing this on Mac, you must quit and reopen your browser for the change to take effect.

Webcam Black Screen in Specific Scenarios

Black screen in Zoom but not in browser? → Zoom → Video Settings → change "Camera" from "Auto" to your specific webcam name.

Black screen after Windows update? → The update may have replaced your camera driver. Reinstall it (step 5 above).

Black screen on external USB webcam? → Try a different USB port. Some USB hubs don't provide enough power for webcams. Plug directly into your computer.

Black screen with green light on? → The camera IS active, but the video isn't rendering. This is almost always a driver or privacy shutter issue.
