Black screen? Camera not detected? Permission denied? Follow this guide — then test your webcam for free.
Webcam issues happen to everyone. A black screen, "camera not found" error, or frozen video on Zoom, Teams, Meet, or Skype is usually caused by one of these:
Try each fix below, then test your webcam after each step using our free tool.
Close all your apps, save your work, and restart your PC or Mac. This clears temporary glitches, frees the camera from any app that may have locked it, and resets the webcam driver. This fixes ~30% of webcam issues.
After restarting, test your webcam to confirm it works.
Many modern laptops (ThinkPad, Dell, HP, MacBook) have a physical privacy shutter — a tiny sliding cover over the camera lens. If it's closed, you'll see a black screen no matter what you do. Slide it open.
Some laptops use a function key to disable the camera: look for a camera icon on F6, F8, or F10 and press Fn + that key to toggle the webcam on.
Webcams can only be used by one app at a time. If Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Skype, OBS Studio, Discord, or Snap Camera is running in the background, your browser won't be able to access the camera.
On Windows: Right-click the taskbar → Task Manager → find any video/camera apps → End task.
On Mac: Press Cmd + Tab to see running apps, close any that might use the camera.
Your browser might have blocked camera access. Here's how to check:
Chrome / Edge: Click the lock icon ⓘ in the address bar → find "Camera" → set to Allow. Or go to chrome://settings/content/camera and remove any blocked sites.
Firefox: Click the permissions icon next to the URL → temporarily allow camera.
Safari: Safari → Settings for This Website → Camera → Allow.
Then refresh the page and try again.
Use WebcamTester.io — it works directly in your browser. Click "Test My Webcam", allow camera access, and you'll instantly see your video feed. The tool also shows:
If your webcam works here but not in Zoom/Teams: the problem is app-specific — check that app's video settings.
If it still doesn't work: continue to the next steps.
Outdated or corrupted drivers are a common cause of webcam failure on Windows.
1. Press Windows + X → Device Manager
2. Expand Cameras or Imaging devices
3. Right-click your webcam → Update driver → Search automatically
4. If that doesn't work, right-click → Uninstall device → restart your PC. Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
For external USB webcams: visit the manufacturer's website (Logitech, Razer, Microsoft) and download the latest driver.
Both Windows and macOS have global privacy settings that can block all apps from accessing your camera.
Windows 10 / 11:
Settings → Privacy & security → Camera → turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera. Make sure your browser is listed and enabled under "Choose which apps can access your camera".
macOS (Ventura / Sonoma / Sequoia):
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → toggle ON for your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). You'll need to quit and reopen the browser after changing this setting.
Zoom: Settings → Video → select your camera from the dropdown. Make sure "Turn off my video when joining" is unchecked.
Microsoft Teams: Settings → Devices → Camera dropdown → select your webcam. Click "Make a test call" to verify.
Google Meet: Click the three dots → Settings → Video → select camera. Use the preview to confirm.
Skype: Settings → Audio & Video → select camera → you should see a preview immediately.
Discord: User Settings → Voice & Video → Video Settings → select camera → click "Test Video".
