Webcam Shows Black Screen? 10 Fixes That Work

You open your webcam and see... nothing but black. A black screen instead of video is one of the most frustrating webcam issues. It can be caused by anything from a privacy shutter to a driver conflict. Work through these 10 fixes in order — most people solve it by fix #3.

Fix 1: Check for Physical Privacy Shutter

The #1 cause of black screens in 2026: the physical privacy shutter built into most modern laptops. Look at the top edge of your laptop screen for a small sliding cover over the camera lens. If it's closed, slide it open. External webcams (Logitech C920, Brio) often have a physical lens cap — make sure it's removed.

Fix 2: Close Other Apps Using the Camera

Only one app can access your webcam at a time. If another app is holding the camera, everything else sees black. Close Zoom, Teams, Meet, Skype, OBS, Discord, FaceTime. Check your browser tabs and system tray.

Fix 3: Restart Your Browser or App

A quick restart often clears the camera lock. Close all browser windows (not just tabs), reopen, and try again. For desktop apps like Zoom or Teams, fully quit (right-click tray icon → Quit) and relaunch.

Fix 4: Update Webcam Drivers (Device Manager)

Right-click Start → Device Manager → Cameras. Right-click your webcam → Update driver → "Search automatically for drivers." If there's a yellow exclamation mark, the driver is broken — try Uninstall device → restart → Windows will reinstall automatically.

Fix 5: Check Windows Camera Privacy Settings

Press Win + I → Privacy & Security → Camera. Ensure "Camera access" is ON and "Let apps access your camera" is ON. Also check that your specific app (Chrome, Zoom, etc.) is allowed in the list below.

Fix 6: Check if Antivirus is Blocking the Camera

Some antivirus programs (Kaspersky, Bitdefender, McAfee) include webcam protection that blocks all camera access. Open your antivirus settings and look for "Webcam Protection" or "Privacy Protection." Temporarily disable it and test. Remember to re-enable after testing.

Fix 7: Uninstall and Reinstall the Camera

In Device Manager, right-click your webcam → Uninstall device. Check "Attempt to remove the driver for this device" if available. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically detect the camera and reinstall the correct driver.

Fix 8: Check USB Port or Power (External Webcams)

For USB webcams, try a different USB port — preferably one directly on your computer (not a hub). External webcams like the Logitech Brio 4K need more power; try a USB 3.0 (blue) port instead of USB 2.0. If using a USB hub, connect the webcam directly to your computer.

Fix 9: Update BIOS or Firmware

Some laptop manufacturers have released BIOS updates that fix camera initialization bugs. This is more common on older Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad, and HP EliteBook models. Check your laptop manufacturer's support website. For external webcams, Logitech and Razer sometimes release firmware updates via their software (Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse).

Fix 10: Test with a Different App

If the Windows Camera app shows video but your browser doesn't, the issue is browser-specific (check permissions). If no app shows video, the issue is hardware or driver-level. Test on our tool to quickly confirm:

BrandCommon Black Screen Cause
