Camera Permission Denied in Browser? How to Fix

You click "Allow" on a camera permission prompt but nothing happens. Or worse — you accidentally clicked "Block" and now every website sees a black screen. Browser camera permissions are the #1 source of webcam issues. Here's how to fix them in every major browser.

Why Browsers Block Cameras by Default

Since 2020, every major browser blocks camera and microphone access by default for security. This prevents websites from spying on you without permission. When a website needs your camera, the browser shows a permission prompt. If you click "Block" (or dismiss the prompt), the site can't access your camera at all — and the browser remembers this choice.

Google Chrome

  1. Click the 🔒 lock icon in the address bar (left of the URL)
  2. Find Camera and set it to Allow
  3. If not visible: Menu (⋮) → SettingsPrivacy and SecuritySite SettingsCamera
  4. Select your camera from the dropdown. Toggle "Sites can ask to use your camera" ON.
  5. Check "Not allowed to use your camera" list. If your site is there, click 🗑 to remove it.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the camera icon or 🛡 shield in the address bar
  2. Click the ❌ next to "Blocked temporarily" for Camera
  3. Or: Menu (☰) → SettingsPrivacy & Security → scroll to PermissionsCamera → "Settings"
  4. Find your site in the list. If status says "Block," change it to "Allow."

Apple Safari

  1. Menu bar → SafariSettings (or Preferences)
  2. Click Websites tab → Camera in the left sidebar
  3. Find your website in the list. Change permission to Allow.
  4. At the bottom, make sure "When visiting other websites" is set to Ask (not Deny)

Microsoft Edge

  2. Click the dropdown next to Camera → select Allow

How to Reset Blocked Permissions

If you've clicked "Block" on a site and can't find it in the settings, the nuclear option is to reset all site permissions:
